My first wedding post of 2013! We had a cold
spring in general this year, and that pattern continued right on through
April 20 in Petoskey. The wedding ceremony was at the beautiful
National Shrine of the Cross in the Woods Catholic
Church, which had an amazing outdoor venue, but thankfully also had a
beautiful and more ideal indoor sanctuary for wintery days like this.
Although cold, the mixed bag of sun and snow did make for a magical
combination in some of the outdoor photography!
The wedding ceremony included a full Mass led by their priest who knew Caryn from the time she was a baby, and also included a unique stone ceremony where family and friends could drop a stone in a glass vase to represent a marriage built on the foundation of family and friends. I believe that the support and love of family and friends is important in all stages of life, and I know from their Christ-centered ceremony and amazing family surrounding them on this day that Caryn and Teddy will have a wonderful community to support them as they build their marriage together.
A highlight of the reception was the Matron of Honor showing a video of Caryn singing at her wedding about 15 years back when Caryn was maybe 10 or 11 years old, surprising and embarrassing the bride! After the video, they sang the song back for Caryn..."Love is something if you give it way, you end up having more..."
As I've been going through their photos I've been reflecting on how wonderful it is to be a part of photographing one of the most important days in a family's life. All the portraits are beautiful and important, but not nearly as special as capturing the love between the new husband and wife, parent to child, and friend to friend. The most blessed people in the world are ones with friends and family surrounding them with support, encouragement, and love. Ted and Caryn have been truly blessed! Congratulations to you both and thanks for having me be a small part of your wedding day!

I am totally in love with Caryn’s dress, which was a very romantic lace style and included many meaningful accessories like her grandmother’s gorgeous handkerchief that had blue lace stitched around the outside. Her engagement ring is a family heirloom from Teddy and has been passed down 3 generations! Caryn was such a gorgeous bride and I am so glad to have had the honor of working with her and Teddy.

After the ceremony we stopped by the pier in downtown Petoskey and braved the cold for a few more outdoor photographs, and then headed off to the wedding reception at Stafford’s Perry Hotel, which was built in 1899. Needless to say, the Rose Room had an historical elegance that made for a delightful reception overlooking the blue water and sunsets of Lake Michigan’s Little Traverse Bay.
